The building where The Academy of Art is situated today was built in 1905 according to the project of architect B. Bocslaph. The Latvian Academy of Art de jure was established in August 20, 1919 by the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers. The official opening took place on October 12, 1921. The Academy of Art was built according to the plans of its first rector Vilhelm Purvitis, who wanted to build the institution of higher artistic. In the year 1936 the monument devoted to J. Rozentals was built near the Academy of Art. But in a year 1965 - the monument devoted to J. Rainis.
