Riga circus

Riga circus

In 1880 the land where nowadays the circus is situated, was bought by the artist of the circus - Albert Samamonsky. Every summer he arrived to Riga to place the big tent and show the programme, in which he also took part. But after some time the tent became small and Salamonsky decides to build the stone building. Today's building of the circus was built according to the project of architect Yan Frindrich Baumanis in 1888. The building is unique because of the fact that the foundation of it consists only from railway. Each of 16 columns consists of three railways put together. These 16 columns hold the roof. The performances in the circus take place during the whole year, but traditionally it is mostly in the winter period.
