Brasas vēsture
Brasas apkaime šodien ietver teritoriju starp dzelzceļu loku un tālāk robeža virzās pa Brīvības un Alojas ielām. Tomēr vēsturiski nosaukums „Brasa” vairāk saistās ar teritorijām aiz dzelzceļa loka. Ir vairākas versijas kā radies nosaukums – Brasa.
Viena no versijām - Brasas stacijas apkaimē tika izveidots brasls pār grāvi, kas savienoja Dzirnavupīti un Šmerļa upīti. Kā zināms, brasls ir sekla vieta upē, kuru izmanto upes šķērsošanai ar kājām vai mehāniskajiem transportlīdzekļiem. Iespējams, ka brasls pāri grāvim bijis Miera ielas posmā pie dzelzceļa. Dzirnavupīte attēlota vairākos 17.gs. Rīgas apkaimes plānos.
Otru versiju izteicis vēsturnieks R. Šīrants, kas uzskata, ka Brasas nosaukums saglabājies no Mazās Jumpravmuižas zemnieka Mārtiņa Brasas vārda, kas 18.gs. 90. gados nomāja krogu tagadējā Gaujas ielā pie Čiekurkalna ūdens torņa. Vairākos 19./20. gs. plānos redzams, ka netālu no Čiekurkalna ūdenstorņa atradušās mežsarga mājas, kas apzīmētas ar nosaukumu Brasas.
Brasu plašāk sāka apdzīvot, attīstoties Sarkandaugavai kā rūpniecības šūpulim 19.gs., tā pamazām veidojās kā strādnieku dzīvojamais rajons.
