Zakusala or Rabbit Island is approximately 300 years old. The island, like the most other islands of Riga, formed after the merger of several smaller islands. Zakusala is a growing island. In 1901 the length of the island was 1,600 meters, in 2000 - already 3600 meters. There were about 49 built-up areas on the island in the 19th century. In addition to the residential houses two sawmills and two shops were on the island. The island's inhabitants were mostly fishermen and to get to Riga used boats and river transport.
The life on the island has changed with the construction of Moscow Bridge (today Island Bridge) in 1976, which made the island easily accessible. The next changes have occurred in the 80s of the 20th century after the construction of the TV Tower and TV Center, when historical buildings of the island were completely demolished.
