Tirdzniecības nama ēka celta laika posmā no 1936. līdz 1940. gadam modernizētā neoklasicisma stilā. Ēkas arhitekts bija A. Galindoms. Lai atbrīvotu vietu veikala celtniecībai, nojauca senās ēkas, likvidēja Ķēniņu ielas posmu, kas to savienoja ar Audēju ielu. Tirdzniecības namu cēla Armijas ekonomiskā universāla vajadzībām. Svinīgajā ēkas pamatakmens iemūrēšanas ceremonijā pirmo akmeni iemūrēja valsts prezidents K. Ulmanis, otro – kara ministrs J. Balodis.

Padomju laikā uz Armijas ekonomiskā universāla veikala bāzes izveidoja Rīgas centrālo universālveikalu. Ēka daļēji tika rekonstruēta 1967. gadā.
1997. gadā ēku iegādājās Norvēģijas firma Linstow, kas šeit ierīkoja universālveikalu „Centrs.” Šajā laikā gandrīz pilnībā tika pārveidots sākotnējais ēkas interjers.
2006. gadā «Centrs» piedzīvoja vēl vienu rekonstrukciju un vienlaicīgi arī vērienīgu paplašināšanos. Tika izstrādāta jauna koncepciju un tas ieguva nosaukumu – «Galerija Centrs». TC jaunajā veidolā tika atklāts 2006. gada augustā.
