Kara muzejs un Pulvertornis |
Atrodas Smilšu ielā 20. Latvijas Kara muzeja ēka veidota kā piebūve Rīgas viduslaiku nocietinājumu sistēmas lielākajam un nozīmīgākajam tornim - Pulvertornim. Kara muzejs tornī bija iekārtots jau kopš 1919. gada. Muzejā bija izveidotas ekspozīcijas par viduslaiku un jauno laiku militārās vēstures tēmām, latviešu piedalīšanos Krievijas 1905. gada revolūcijā, 1. Pasaules kara notikumiem, Neatkarīgas Latvijas valsts proklamēšanu, Atbrīvošanas cīņām, valsts izveidošanu. Muzejā atradās bagātas ieroču, foto, dokumentu, ordeņu, formas tērpu un citas kolekcijas. Tomēr muzeja plašajām kolekcijām šaurās Pulvertorņa telpas bija par šauru. Laika posmā no 1937. līdz 1939. gadam pēc arhitekta A. Galindoma projekta tika uzcelta piebūve, kas likvidēja Pulvertorņa pseidogotisko fasādi.

1940. gadā Latvijas Kara muzeju likvidēja. Daļa muzeja kolekcijas pazuda, bet pārējo nodeva citiem muzejiem un kolekcijām. No 1957. gada līdz Neatkarības atjaunošanai tur atradās Latvijas PSR Revolūcijas muzejs. Latvijas Kara muzejs tika atjaunots 1990. gadā. Muzeja mērķis ir iepazīstināt ar Latvijas militāri politisko vēsturi.
