Latvijas Valsts koksnes ķīmijas institūts dibināts 1946. gada. Institūtam ir bijuši vairāki nosaukumi. Līdz 1958. gadam tas bija LPSR ZA Mežsaimniecības problēmu institūts, 1958.-1963. gada – LPSR Mežsaimniecības problēmu un koksnes ķīmijas institūts, 1964.-1992. – LZA Koksnes ķīmijas institūts, bet no 1993. gada Latvijas Valsts Koksnes ķīmijas institūts. Kopš 2006. gada 1. maija – Valsts Aģentūra “Latvijas Valsts koksnes ķīmijas institūts”, bet no 2007. gada 6. janvāra publiska atvasināta persona "Latvijas Valsts koksnes ķīmijas institūts".
Šobrīd institūtā tiek veikti pētījumi valsts finansētajos pētījumu projektos (grantos), sadarbības projektos un valstiskas nozīmes zinātniskajās programmās. Paralēli pētījumiem tiek izstrādāti līgumdarbi, sadarbojoties ar Latvijas ražotājiem un risinot tiem aktuālas problēmas. Cieša sadarbība izveidojusies gan ar lielajiem ražotājiem kā AS ”Latvijas Finieris”, VAS „Latvenergo”, AS „Olainfarm” u.c. Latvijas Valsts koksnes ķīmijas institūta zinātnieki piedalās daudzos starptautiskos ES finansētos projektos, tai skaitā ES ekselences centru atbalsta projektā “LV koksnes ķīmijas institūta integrācija Eiropas pētniecības vidē” (WOODPRO).
