Līdz 1845.gadam pareizticībā Rīgā bija pārgājuši nedaudz vairāk kā simts latvieši. Tas bija pamats, lai lūgtu latviešu draudzei piešķirt baznīcu, kur noturēt dievkalpojumus latviski. Dievkalpojums latviski atļāva noturēt Rīgas Dievmātes patvēruma kapsētas baznīcā, saukta arī par Pokrova baznīcu. Pirmais dievkalpojums latviski notika jau 1845. gada 29. gada aprīlī. 1858. gadā tika apvienotas latviešu un krievu draudzes, lai gan draudzes locekļu skaits sasniedz 1200 cilvēku, tomēr dievkalpojumi tika noturēti vienlaicīgi gan latviski, gan krieviski.

1867. gadā tika uzcelta otra kapsētas baznīca – Debesbraukšanas baznīca, kas bija paredzēta 500 dievlūdzējiem. Baznīcas iekšdarbos aktīvi piedalījās arī krievu draudzes locekļi, un bagātīgi ziedojumi pienāca arī no Maskavas.
1875. gada decembrī nodega Rīgas Dievmātes patvēruma baznīca, bet jau 1879. gada 9. novembrī tika iesvētīta atjaunotā baznīca. Baznīca tika celta pēc arhitekta R. Pflūga projekta. Krievu draudze pārgāja uz jauno baznīcu, bet latviešu draudze palika Debesbraukšanas baznīcā.
Šobrīd baznīca atrodas Pokrova kapsētas teritorijā, Mēness ielā 3.
